Meet Millie – Our School Dog Mentor
Millie is our beautiful chocolate Labrador and fully trained Dog Mentor. She joins us in school every Friday and plays an important part in supporting children’s mental health, emotional wellbeing and sense of belonging.
With her calm, gentle and friendly nature, Millie helps children feel safe, relaxed and ready to engage. Spending time with her can provide reassurance, encourage communication and help children build confidence and positive relationships.
Pawsitive Start Breakfast Club
Every Friday morning, Millie helps to lead our Pawsitive Start breakfast club.
Pawsitive Start gives children a calm, welcoming and positive beginning to the school day. Children can enjoy breakfast, spend time with Millie and take part in relaxed activities alongside familiar adults and friends.
The club supports children to settle into school, build relationships and feel emotionally ready for the day ahead.
Supporting Children’s Wellbeing
Throughout the day, Millie works with small groups and individual children as part of our wider mental health and wellbeing provision. Her work may include:
- Supporting children with emotional regulation
- Encouraging confidence and communication
- Developing friendships and social skills
- Providing a calm presence during wellbeing activities
- Listening while children read
- Helping children who may feel anxious or unsettled
- Encouraging engagement, attendance and a positive connection with school
Activities are carefully planned according to the needs of the children involved. Millie’s role complements the relational, trauma-informed and nurturing support already provided by our staff.
Working Safely with Millie
Millie completed her training through The Dog Mentor, which prepares dogs to work safely and effectively with children in educational settings. She has been assessed for her temperament, obedience and suitability for school-based work.
Children are taught how to interact with Millie safely, calmly and respectfully. No child is required to have contact with her, and individual needs, allergies and family preferences are always considered.
